About the Teacher/Welcome Msg
This will be my 16th year teaching first grade for Desoto County Schools. I taught first grade for 14 years at Southaven Elementary. This will be my second year teaching first grade at Desoto Central Primary. I graduated from the University of Mississippi in May 2004 with a degree in Elementary Education. I really enjoy working with children. I live in Southaven with my husband, Wesley. We have two sons, Jacob and Austin, and a spoiled papillion, Chloe. I am looking forward to making this a great and successful year! I will do anything that I can and need to do to make this year as easy and fun as possible! Please feel free to contact me by email. Also, please feel free to write me a note and send it in your child's daily folder. I will get back with you as soon as possible. Thank you and let's have a fabulous first grade year!

Weekly Skills for When We Return to School:
School will be closed at least through April 17.
Math - We should be finishing up Topic 11 in Envision Math this week. Topic 11 focuses on subtracting by multiples of 10. Example: 80 - 20 =? We have talked about many different math strategies that we could use to help us solve problems like the one listed below. (count back by 10, use a number line, use a 120 number chart, use an open number line) After Topic 11 we will introduce measurement. We will identify the longest, shortest, biggest, and smallest objects. We will begin telling time to the hour and half hour. Students will recognize the parts of a digital clock. ( The face hour hand, and minute hand. The next topic is about counting money. When we teach money we identify the names and values of coins. We will count money up to $1. The last topic we will cover this year is fractions. We will identify using shapes ( one whole, one half, one third, and one fourth). You are welcome to get a head start on practicing any of these skills if you like. It IS NOT required. However, practicing skills that we have already taught is crucial task at this time.
Reading - Students should be able to recall information from stories that are read to them. They can practice visualizing, and making predictions about stories that are read to them or they read their self. Please continue to review sight words that are in the back of your child's daily folder.
Writing - Students will recall an event and write a narrative using temporal words(first, next, then, last.) Example writing prompts: My favorite vacation , Making a favorite snack with my parents, How I get ready for school, School Routine.
What Can You Do Now:
In the meantime. I have shared a few great resources that you can use at home to practice reading, writing, and math skills. Also please remember that you have full access to all of the websites that you paid for this school year with the technology fee. Every student that paid their technology fee has their username and passwords in their daily folder. I will continue to send out VERY IMPORTANT information through REMIND. Please join remind if you have not, it is very important that you do. I will continue to update you with information. If you have concerns during this time please send me an email or you may communicate through REMIND 101. I will do my best to get back with you in a timely manner.
Please look in the Documents tab in the bottom left corner for a list of suggested activities/assignments to do until school resumes. Please know that these are suggestions and do not feel obligated to complete them all.
Please feel free to send us a note in your child's purple folder or message me on Remind with any questions or concerns. I also check my email several times throughout the day so this is my preferred method of communication.
Please complete the homework packet that is sent home on Monday. It will be due by Friday, but can be turned in when completed. On the notebook paper, students will need to write a sentence with each spelling word or make a spelling story. Please see the weekly newsletter I send home for weekly skills.
Please read on Raz-Kids as often as possible and practice Dolch sight words. This will help your child become a stronger, more confident, and successful reader. Please practice Math of Reflex at home to help your child become better at fast facts.
Wish List: I buy many items for our class on my own. Anytime you would like to help out, please feel free to send in Amazon, Office Depot, or Walgreens gift cards. The Amazon and Office Depot gift cards will be for supplies for our classroom. We also love to get books for our classroom library. The students love going to pick new books out every Friday for their bookbags. Thanks so much for all of your support!
